The Scenic Cancellations of Manchukuo

Scenic cancellations were first used on 25th June 1934 at a post office in Harbin, this was followed on 1st September 1936 when a further 36 designs were put into use.

Scenic cancels could be requested from certain Post Offices and Postal Agencies as a souvenir. They were valid for postal use. Most were 35mm in diameter and appeared in either brownish red, red, or deep violet ink.

They fell out of use during 1938, although in Japan the tradition is continued to this day. If anyone wishes to send me further scans I will be pleased to include them here.

Please note that I list these cancels in alphabetical order by Chinese place name, the numbering used on the website is for reference purposes only, it has no other significance.

Scenic 1 - First Issued 1st September 1936.
This example was issued in 安東 Antung (now Dandong).

Design features - The China-Korea Friendship Bridge over the Yalu river and a building in mist.

Scenic 2 - First Issued 1st September 1936.
This example was issued in 朝陽 Chaoyang

Design features - A lama pagoda with a second pagoda in the distance.

Scenic 3 - First Issued 1st September 1936.
This example was issued in 承德 Ch'eng-te (now Chengde).

Design features - scenes from the famous summer palace. The octagonal 9 story pagoda is 70m tall and was built in 1751.

Scenic 4 - First Issued 1st September 1936.
This example was issued in 赤峰 Chifeng

Design features - two camels in the Gobi desert Inner Mongolia and mountains.

This example was issued in 凌源 Ling yuan.

Design features - a lama pagoda, a gate and what looks like a fossil fish.

Scenic 6 - First Issued 1st September 1936.
This example was issued in 頦縣 Chin hsien.

Design features - a lama pagoda.

This example was issued in 奉天 Fengtian (Mukden).

Design features - The Northern Mausoleum, stone elephant, the stone lion and dragon pillar.

Scenic 8 - First Issued 1st September 1936.
This example was issued in 奉天城內 Fengtian Chengnei.

Design features - a dragon pillar and the North Mausoleum.

This example was issued in 奉天北陵 Fengtian Peiling (Mukden City).

Design features - images from Mukden North Mausoleum clearly based upon the design of Zirkle 43.

This example was issued in 海拉爾 Hailar

Design features - a Mongol with a yurt, horses and pig.

Scenic 11 - First Issued 1st September 1936.
This example was issued in 哈綸阿爾山 Ha-lun-a-erh-shan in Hsing-an (North) Province 興安北省 (Inner Mongolia).

Design features - Hot springs inside the fence with animals and yurts on the plains beyond.

Scenic 12 - First Issued 1st September 1936.
This example was issued in 哈爾濱 Harbin

Design features - the Sungari river bridge, the Manchukuo monument (outside Harbin station) and St Sophia's Cathedral (now a museum).

Scenic 13 - First Issued 24th June 1934.
This example was issued in 哈爾濱松浦 Harbin Matsuura. Note that the "Check List of Japanese Scenic Cancellations" lists this as having been first issued on 25th June 1934. My thanks to Sylvain Vivance for this image.

This example was issued in 黒河 Heiho.

This example was issued in 西安 Hsi-an (now Xian).

Design features - Hansaika Coal Mine.

Design features - ancient gate plus a hot spring emblem .

This example was issued in 新京頭道構 Hsinking New Main Road P.O

Design features - the monument to the loyal dead and other Hsinking landmarks. This cancel also appears with the two character 新京 town name.

This example was issued in 琿春 Hun-chun.

Design features - a bridge over the Tumen river, mountains and a temple.

This example was issued in 佳木斯 Kia mu sze.

Design features - a bridge over the Tumen river, mountains and a temple.

This example was issued in 吉林 Kirin.

Design features - the Temple on Peishan, the Sungari river bridge, junk, and clouds.

This example was issued in 遼陽 Liao Yang (SMRZ).

Design features - the white pagoda at Liao Yang which is featured on the first set of stamps issued in Manchukuo.

Scenic 22 - First Issued 1st September 1936.
This example was issued in 遼源 Liao yuan.

Design features - a pile of coal and horses in the foreground (this is a centre of coal mining) a bridge crossing and a river with smoke plumes from Anshan in the distance. The border may be based upon the Great Wall which runs not far from this town.

This example was issued in 凌源 Lingyuan

Design features - a Buddhist pagoda, mountains a gateway and what looks like rock with a fossil fish.

This example was issued in 龍井村 Lung-ching-ts'un

Design features - pictures of two shrines. Lung ching ts'un means "dragon well village", so these may be wells.

Scenic 24a - Above example issued 29th October 1939. Town name shown as 龍井 Lung-ching

This is almost identical to the last example however the town name has been changed from Lung-ching-ts'un (Longjing cun, meaning Longjing Village) to read Lung-ching. Maybe it simply outgrew its village status and became a town?

This version of the cancel is not mentioned in "Check List of Japanese Scenic Cancellations" Published by the Japan Philatelic Publications, Toshima-ku,Mejiro 1-4-23, Tokyo" so it might be something of a rarity.

Scenic 25 - First Issued 1st September 1936.
This example was issued in 滿洲里 Manchouli.

Design features - a camel, signpost reading MANCHZHURIYA in Cyrillic (Russian for Manchuria) and the railway line. Above is a late example 21st February 1938.

This example was issued in 牡丹江 Mudanjiang.

Design features - an agricultural scene with a village, the railway crossing and a river with mountains in the distance.

This example was issued in 南綏中 Nan-Sui-Chung (now Nansuizhong) in Chinchow.

Design features - The great wall of China and mountains.

Design features - a building, possibly the post office at Tao-an.

Design features - the Tumen river and a bridge over the river to Korea on the far side with fort on the near side.

Design features - a pagoda on a hill overlooking what is probably the Sungari reservoir, with a hut or shrine in the foreground.

This example was issued in 王爺廟 Wangyehmiao.

Design features - Memorial on a hill in the background with a temple (?) in the foreground.

Scenic 36 - First Issued 1st September 1936.
This example was issued in 延吉 Yenki, Kirin (now Yanji, in Jilin).

Design features - a bridge over the Bu'erhatong river, the town and mountains. The population of this town is mostly Korean.

Scenic 37 - First Issued 1st September 1936.
This example was issued in 營口 Ying-k'ou

Design features - a seascape with boats.

Size 35mm dia. Known colours - red, deep violet and reddish brown.
